The Installation of a new Honorary Member of the Royal Company of Merchants is a rare event.
The Master had the pleasure of installing His Grace the Duke of Buccleuch and Queensberry as an Honorary Member at the Company Meeting on 21 February 2020. The first Honorary Members were installed in 1902, the Earl of Rosebery, Lord Balfour of Burley and Andrew Carnegie. Since then 59 eminent people have honoured the Company by becoming Honorary Members, including Sir Winston Churchill, Her Majesty the Queen, Prince Philip and the Princess Royal.
The Duke spoke most cordially to the Members and said how grateful he was to have had this honour bestowed on him, just as it had been bestowed on his father before him. To commemorate his installation the Master presented him with a leather bound copy of the history of the Company, an Honorary Members’ lapel badge and a Company tie. The Members gave the Duke a very hearty welcome.
